BUILDING OF FACULTY LEADERS

Danica Žilková

Short intro about me:

PhD student at Comenius University in Bratislava, research wise dedicated to study of space debris and low-Earth orbit satellites. Utilizing the techniques of low-resolution spectroscopy to identify and characterize aerospace materials on the surface of artificial space objects. This research is utmost crucial, since we are in the era of rising satellite mega-constellations, to predict the surface brightness and reflectivity of such objects, to fight against space pollution which is threatening future ground-based astronomy.

How did your career benefit from the ERASMUS project?

During the Erasmus project I have worked on spectroscopy of Near-Earth Orbit asteroids (NEO), which in nature resembles the spectroscopy of artificial space objects, as in satellites or other space debris. I have learnt techniques which are applicable to both my past and future research. As it is common in science, in my earlier projects I have stumbled upon questions which I was not able to answer and only after discussing them with my Erasmus supervisor, who offered a view outside of the box, I was able to solve these issues. Which leads to the most important point, that international collaborations and sharing of knowledge can lead to a healthy scientific growth and evolution which I believe should be always encouraged and cherished.

How did the ERASMUS program support your personal development?

Participating in the Erasmus project allowed me to experience working in the research team abroad, experience their working mentality, attitude, habits, all of which enriched my view of broad academic environment. For me personally, it had been a great honor to work alongside such an inspiring supervisor as I had, and I am very grateful to the whole Erasmus project team for allowing me this opportunity. We have bonded with my supervisor so much we continue to work together, soon we will be presenting at the 2023 IAU Assembly and are planning more collaborations in the future. My advice to all the young students would be to follow their gut when it comes to good supervisors, it makes all the difference in your entire study.

Can you share some experience from your ERASMUS exchange?

During this Erasmus internship I have stayed at the island of La Palma, which is a marvel. It reminded me of a deserted island with only bananas and palm trees. Incredibly peaceful, sunny, but wild at the same time. This island environment was for me a one-of-a-kind workplace with no distractions and no hustle of a big city. Just starry skies, ocean views and sunsets, all of which connected me to nature - the primary source of our scientific inspiration. Visiting the observatory at the Roque de Los Muchachos was an eye-opening experience and I cannot wait to return there again.
